From time to time the USA "shocks" us with the news of a cruel shooting ending out in tragedy.

Let's read this piece of news and comment on it:

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. ET. Sandy Hook is a K-4 school. There are about 670 students enrolled there. At Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School,  a gunman identified  as 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally wounded 20 childrensome as young as 5, according to the president — and six adults. Eighteen children were pronounced dead at the school and two more died after being taken to a hospital. Six adult victims were dead at the scene (including the gunman and his mother).

As students were being led from the building, the children were told to hold each others' hands and "close their eyes."

It ranks as the worst such attack at an elementary, middle or high school in the nation's history, horribly surpassing the 13 people killed by two students at Colorado's Columbine High School in 1999. The nation watched in horror Friday as the scope of a tragedy in Newtown, Conn., became clear. As a visibly upset President Obama said at midafternoon, "our hearts are broken."

A visibly upset President Obama, pausing at times to wipe his eyes, just told the nation that "our hearts are broken today."

"The majority of those who died today were children — beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," he said. "They had their entire lives ahead of them ... birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."

Obama said he and the first lady, like all parents, would hug their children hard tonight. He asked the nation to pray for those who were killed and their families. Quoting Scripture, he said he hopes that will help "heal the broken-hearted and bind up their wounds."

Flags at the Capitol were lowered to half-staff.
